WOW The Cultural District Porto, Portugal

Vila Nova de Gaia, September 3rd, 2025 – As the world leader in cork production, Portugal is rightly proud of this natural material, and WOW is celebrating its significance through the Planet Cork. From September 20th to 30th, cork and its deep connection to sustainability will take centre stage. Marking National Sustainability Day, which falls on September 25th, WOW's Sustainability Week includes a variety of activities aimed at promoting cork stopper collection and recycling, while raising awareness about the environmental value of this distinctly Portuguese material.

As part of the initiative, WOW will promote the collection of used cork stoppers. Its own restaurants — which have already gathered half a ton of cork — will be joined by neighbouring hotels and establishments, and visitors are also encouraged to bring corks from home.

“The challenge is called 'Upcycling Cork by WOW', and the goal is to invite everyone to bring their used cork stoppers and contribute to a more sustainable future — all while enjoying a fun and cultural experience at WOW,” explains Marta Bravo, Director of WOW's museums. “It's true that we collect used corks all year round, but during these ten days, anyone who brings in 1 kg or more will receive a ticket to visit the Planet Cork museum and a cork keyring.”

“We're committed to sending all collected corks for recycling and transforming them into new products — often in higher-end categories, hence the term 'upcycling'. We would love to see this become a regular habit — that each time our guests visit WOW, they bring their used corks along to recycle,” she adds.

Cork: A Portuguese Product, a Symbol of Sustainability

Portugal is the world's leading cork producer, and this remarkable natural resource is a shining example of the circular economy. Far from being waste, used cork stoppers can be transformed into insulation, design objects, accessories, or even innovative solutions for various industries. These initiatives go beyond simple recycling — they invite visitors of all ages to give cork a second life and to understand the positive impact that a natural material can have on the planet's future.

To learn more, from September 20th to 30th, the Planet Cork at WOW will offer guided tours at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. These tours provide an interactive and entertaining way to explore the history, versatility, and sustainable future of cork. The museum is ideal for family visits and shows how this natural material has been reinvented and remains essential in building a greener planet.

Kokedama Workshop: Creativity in the Name of Sustainability

On Saturday, September 27th at 11:00 AM, a Kokedama Workshop will take place inside the Planet Cork. This hands-on gardening activity is rooted in sustainability principles and based on an ancient Japanese technique, blending nature, design, and environmental awareness. Participation costs €30 per person, and tickets are already available.
