Jumeirah Bali Unveils “Mawedangan” - a Cultural Tea Ritual Exclusive to the Resort

Jumeirah Bali

Uluwatu, Bali 24 July 2025 – Jumeirah Bali officially introduced its Curated Ritual, Mawedangan, during an intimate launch gathering held at the resort's Library. Inspired by the ceremonial grace of Patehan – the traditional Javanese tea ceremony once reserved for loyalty – Mawedangan has been thoughtfully reimagined as a signature experience offered exclusively to guests of Jumeirah Bali.

To deliver on Jumeirah's promise of elevating the guest experience, each property highlights a signature ritual that reflects its unique indentity. At Jumeirah Bali, that ritual is Mawedangan – an invitation to pause, reconnect, and embrace the cultural spirit woven into the resort's design and philosophy.

Set within the resort's tranquil, open-air spaces, Mawedangan draws inspiration from royal tea customs of Java, infused with Balinese warmth and sensory storytelling. The journey begins from a guided aroma and tasting of Indonesia's finest teas – including Green Tea, Black Tea, Java Jasmine, White Tea, and Rosela – before guests select one to enjoy, paired with traditional jajan pasar and calming aromatherapy. Each step unfolds with gentle narration, symbolic gestures, and ceremonial grace.

During the launch event, guests were welcomed with a Javanese theatrical dance, followed by a ceremonial Keparak Parade - attendants carrying sacred ritual elements and a full presentation of the tea ritual. The experience concluded with a couple's dance inspired by romantic classical court performances, accompanied by soft traditional melodies.

Jumeirah Bali's General Manager, Ram Hiralal, shared: “Mawedangan is our tribute to the beauty of Indonesian tradition, and a way for guests to discover Jumeirah Bali's cultural depth through a meaningful sensory journey. As a Curated Ritual, it is not just something to witness – it's something to feel, to remember, and to take home with you.”

Mawedangan is now part of the regular guest experience at Jumeirah Bali, offered twice weekly and select seasonal gatherings. This ritual is unique to the resort and cannot be found elsewhere – echoing its architectural inspiration from Majapahit palaces, its spiritual sensibility, and its commitment to honouring both Balinese and Javanese heritage.
